5 NCAA basketball teams on alert this week: Could Duke still lose?

The Duke Blue Devils and LSU Tigers find themselves among the most interesting college basketball upset picks this week.

The top of the college basketball world has truly been rocked by huge upheavals. Saturday was a particularly bloody day for the top teams because dukeKansas, Alabama and Iowa State all lost, leading to a drop in the AP Top 25 rankings for those programs this week.

The Jayhawks and Cyclones were on our upset list of potential victims last week with Ohio State getting tripped up by Indiana at Assembly Hall. Let’s take a look at five other top programs that could find themselves in jeopardy as we break down the top college basketball upset picks of the week.

Upset alert: Upset college basketball picks in Week 10

Note: All matches listed below were on the schedule at the time of publication. COVID-19 concerns could lead to postponements at any time.

No. 23 Providence at Creighton – Tuesday

The Friars were another team that suffered an upset last week when they traveled to Marquette and left Wisconsin with a humiliating 32-point loss. Saturday’s win over St John’s was a good rebound for Providence, but they have another tough road trip Tuesday night against Creighton. The Bluejays already have a home win over Villanova on their resume and could stumble Providence there if the Brothers aren’t careful.

No. 12 LSU in Florida – Wednesday

Last week was a banner for LSU, which swept Kentucky and Tennessee at home to prove their legitimacy as SEC title contenders. The Tigers have to be careful not to get overconfident after that streak when they hit the road to face a dangerous Florida team on Wednesday night. The Gators have been seeded at some point this season and are desperate to win after a rocky 0-2 start in the SEC, making this an unpleasant game for LSU to try to grab on the road.

Duke No. 8 at Wake Forest – Wednesday

Duke has looked sluggish since coming off its COVID hiatus, leaving Georgia Tech to trail for a while in a win before falling to Miami at home this weekend. These results aren’t great for a Blue Devils side who have far more talent than either of their opponents and Mike Krzyzewski’s side could lose again if they don’t pull themselves together against Wake Forest on Wednesday . The Demon Deacons are a tournament-worthy team who know that this home shot against Duke might be their only opportunity to add a meaningful victory to their March Madness resume, so this place is fraught with trouble for Duke.

No. 20 Seton Hall in Marquette – Saturday

No game on the road to the Big East is easy and Seton Hall could learn that lesson the hard way on Saturday. We’ve already mentioned Marquette, who beat Providence by 32 at home last week, and the Golden Eagles could really add another significant boost by knocking out the Pirates.

No. 24 Alabama at Mississippi State – Saturday

It’s been hard to know what to make of Alabama this season, which has already won games against Gonzaga and Houston while losing to Iona, Davidson and Missouri. Saturday’s trip to Starkville is dangerous as Mississippi State has the talent to be a tournament team but has yet to produce the results needed to break out of the 8-9 bracket. The Bulldogs would love a chance to beat the Crimson Tide and get the boost that might come with it.
