MIES (Switzerland) – The next edition of the FIBA Intercontinental Cup will mark a turning point in the history of the competition which began 56 years ago, as it will be held in February 2022 in Cairo, Egypt, in a African country for the first time.
The event is set to further cement its unique transatlantic status by also becoming the first club competition in basketball history to feature contenders who will represent four different regional leagues.
Zamalek SC Cairo, who have just been crowned champions of the inaugural Basketball Africa League campaign, will take the next step by becoming the first African club to participate in the FIBA Intercontinental Cup.
Hereda San Pablo Burgos, defending FIBA Intercontinental Cup champion and winner of the 2020-21 Basketball Champions League, headline the field of entrants, looking to become the first club to win back-to-back trophies from the Intercontinental Cup since fellow Spaniards Real Madrid achieved the feat in 1977.
The Brazilian Flamengo was crowned the 2020-21 Basketball Champions League Americas champion and will return to the Intercontinental Cup after three years, when he reached the final at home in Rio de Janeiro but lost to AEK Athens.
Lakeland Magic, the Orlando Magic affiliate that won the NBA G League title in 2020-21, will make its first appearance in the intercontinental contest, taking over from fellow G League clubs Austin Spurs and Rio Grande Valley. Vipers.

The big event, organized by the Egyptian Basketball Federation at the Hassan Mostafa Sports Palace in Cairo, will start on Friday February 11, 2022 with the two semi-finals and end on Sunday February 13, 2022 with the final and the 3rd-place the game.

The 2022 edition also marks a return to the four-team format that was successfully reinstated in 2019. In 2021, the FIBA Intercontinental Cup was played in a one-game final, with FIBA adapting the format due to the pandemic. The final was held in Buenos Aires and Burgos beat Argentina’s Quimsa 82-73 to lift the trophy.
Real Madrid are the most successful club in the competition’s history, having won the title five times, the most recent being their 2015 success against Brazilian Bauru in Sao Paulo.
The draw for the FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2022 will take place early next year.
