Kentucky, Kansas and 5 NCAA basketball teams on high alert this week

With the final week of the regular season, bubble teams with home dates against foes like Kansas and Kentucky are college basketball’s top picks.

College basketball’s regular season ends this week and offers fewer opportunities for bubble teams to make statements to impress the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee before march madness. Desperate teams given the opportunity to face ranked opponents at home often seize the opportunity with inspiring performances that can lead to upsets, a fact that Auburn and Texas Tech learned the hard way last week.

This week’s college basketball upset picks are largely based on teams entering the week and needing a boost to capitalize on opportunities to face off with elite foes. Let’s take a look at the five teams most vulnerable to an upset during Judgment Week, starting with the Kansas Jayhawks.

Upset Alert: Upset Week 17 College Basketball Picks

Note: All matches listed below were on the schedule at the time of publication. COVID-19 issues may result in cancellations on short notice.

Kansas No. 6 at TCU – Tuesday

The Horned Frogs did a great job securing their spot on the court by knocking out Texas Tech on Saturday and can secure a spot off by earning a win over the Jayhawks this week. Kansas and TCU actually play twice in a row thanks to COVID makeup, creating an NBA-style back and forth the Horned Frogs can enjoy, but Tuesday’s home game is a much easier matter than going. on the road and winning at Allen Fieldhouse on Thursday.

No. 5 Auburn at Mississippi State – Wednesday

Although Mississippi State isn’t exactly on the bubble, they are a dangerous SEC team and are capable of knocking anyone down if they play their best basketball. That’s bad news for Auburn, which has lost three straight conference games on the road and hasn’t made an impressive road effort since a 15-point win over South Carolina on Jan. 4.

No. 24 Iowa at Michigan – Thursday

The Hawkeyes are relatively safe bubble-wise after picking up a few Quad 1 wins, but Michigan finds itself firmly in trouble after losing its 12th game to Illinois on Sunday. The Wolverines can’t afford too many more losses and that means they could up their game here to beat Iowa on senior night at Crisler Center.

Kentucky No. 7 vs. Florida – Saturday

There is perhaps no better definition of a bubble team this season than Florida, which enters the week 18-11 overall, 8-8 in a solid SEC, and has two marquee wins ( against Auburn and Ohio State on neutral ground) to go with some brutal losses (Texas Southern at home, at Ole Miss, Maryland). With Kentucky coming to town on Senior Day, it could be a circle-type effort for the Gators, who could be feeling much better about their bubble chances of entering the SEC tournament by knocking out the Wildcats.

No. 14 Houston at Memphis – Sunday

The Cougars have already lost to Memphis once this season at home and now must hit the road in a game the Tigers desperately need on the final day of the regular season. Memphis is probably on the right side of the cut line right now, but sweeping the Cougars would give Penny Hardaway’s team a ton of wiggle room to play ahead of the AAC tournament.
