Local consultancy firm FTS gives young local basketball players a boost with new tournament

Young basketball players are about to have a great opportunity to compete in a new local tournament this summer.

The FTS Youth Basketball Championship will be held on May 7and as of June 30and 2022 at the RCAF in Camana Bay.

The summer tournament will feature six teams of U18 male players with plans already underway to launch a female tournament later in the year.

“Youth sport is an incredible force in the development of young people and I think its value is sometimes underestimated in the Cayman Islands,” said FTS director Paul Byles.

Byles says he hopes this small contribution will serve as a spark to rekindle young people’s interest in the sport.

Byles, who has been a volunteer football coach and head of youth development at the Academy Sports Club for the past 10 years, said the goal is to help the local basketball community develop the sport by focusing on young people.

Local basketball coach and Eagle Sports Academy principal Ed Pellot-Rosa serves as the tournament’s technical advisor. Coach Ed is the current coach of the Men’s National Basketball Team and is highly respected within the local basketball community.

“We are driven to create a highly competitive growth atmosphere for young athletes. We designed the tournament structure to excite the next generation of athletes, coaches and fans,” said Coach Ed.

There will be 3 matches played each Saturday followed by semi-finals and then finals played over a series of 3 matches.

FTS is also providing uniforms for all youth teams and will do the same for the upcoming Women’s Basketball Championship.

“We encourage all local basketball coaches with women’s teams to contact us through the website to arrange,” Coach Ed added.
