Jordan Clarkson ‘safe to play’ in FIBA World Cup, says SBP

Filipino-American NBA player Jordan Clarkson gives Gilas Pilipinas a much-needed boost for the FIBA Basketball World Cup, which the Philippines will co-host with Japan and Indonesia

MANILA, Philippines — Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) have one less thing to worry about next year’s FIBA Basketball World Cup.

The federation said Friday (July 22) that Filipino-American NBA player Jordan Clarkson was a lock for the global basketball showdown, which the country will co-host with Japan and Indonesia.

“Utah Jazz guard Jordan Clarkson is sure to play in the World Cup,” the SBP said in a statement.

It is uncertain, however, whether the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year will attend the World Cup as a homegrown or naturalized player.

As it stands, Clarkson – whose mother, Annette Tullao Davis, is Filipino-American – is still considered a naturalized player by FIBA.

The top-scoring fullback is expected to take the naturalized spot when he plays for the Philippines in the fourth window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers in August.

Finishing the first round with a 2-2 card, Gilas Pilipinas will face Lebanon on August 25 and Saudi Arabia on August 29 for the fourth window.

“The only thing Jordan will bring to the team is gravity,” national team head coach Chot Reyes said. PlayItRight TV. “Just by being him on the pitch, the other team is really going to worry about stopping him.”

“Because of that alone, he’s going to give his teammates open looks, open spaces and the ability for other players to attack and score. That’s the only thing.

Clarkson, who last played for the national team at the 2018 Asian Games, averaged 16 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in the previous NBA season.

Reyes said Clarkson was able to shake things up like Japanese star Yuta Watanabe and Lebanese prop Wael Arakji – players who made life miserable in the Philippines during the FIBA Asia Cup.

“Players like these, they’ll bring you something, they’ll bring you a basket, a foul, they can play a great game, an assist. I think that’s what Jordan can bring to this team,” Reyes said. – Rappler.com
