Penticton youth basketball teams shine on provincial stage in Kelowna – Kelowna Capital News

Two Penticton-based basketball teams rose to the challenge yet again last week, winning division titles at the annual FYBA Kelownafornia Classic.

Against some of the toughest competition in the province, Lake City Basketball’s U13 and U16 men’s teams finished the tournament atop their respective divisions on May 29.

For the second time in three weeks, the Penticton-based program has brought back computer equipment. In Coquitlam, May 14-15, the aforementioned U13 boys won a division title in a spring showcase tournament.

“We had contributions at every level all weekend,” said coach Chris Terris, who later added that some Lake City teams are good enough to play anyone in BC.

After the most recent tournament in Kelowna, the U13s are now a strong 11-2 this season, while the U16s are 10-4.

A win against Vancouver-based team “Cobra Red” was among the headliners for Penticton’s U16s in Kelowna, with Troy Isaacs, Carter O’Neil, Peter Kunka and Dezi Ducheck leading offensively.

The U13s, meanwhile, went undefeated in four games, beating teams from across the Lower Mainland and even Calgary, Alta. to win the division title.

“When we play hard, defend the team and go out in transition, we’re a tough team to play against,” coach Russ Reid said.

Penticton U12 and U17 were also in attendance, each finishing the tournament with a 2-2 record.

The local U13, U16 and U17 teams will be back in action June 17-19 when they take to the courts in Langely for the BC Basketball Club Championships.

Teams will play at the Langley Events Center and even catch a Fraser Valley Bandits game on site, a professional team that competes in the Canadian Elite Basketball League.
